Dad's visit

For those of you who dont know, my dad came to visit me last week. No worries.....even though he is old and well, old...we still had tons of fun. There was just a little scare when we couldnt find him in Beijing and waking up to a phone call from the people who were supposed to pick him up saying "we dont know where you dad is". But no worries, we made it to Kunming. So my dad developed this little food allergy to starch....which includes rice....luckily, rice is not in abundance here in CHINA!!! But this meant that we had to eat at fancy foreign restaurants in which the meals were happily paid for by him. So we ate at the Brazilian Steak house, Wicker basket (Christian Foreign restaurant), Prague Cafe, Salvador's Cafe (which was the first time i have ever eaten breakfast out in kunming), O'Reillys (of course). We saw the Yunnan nationalities villages which is a place down in the southern most part of kunming where they have brought all of the traditional clothing and customs of each village and put them in their own little section in a tourist trap area. The biggest problem was that sometimes we would pass through two to three villages and still thought we were in the same village.....We went to a couple museums. I dont remember what they were, but i bet my dad liked them. He got to see two of the schools that i work at. Just the one on Xinwen road and Jinxing road...he didnt get to see the one on Xinying road...So funny story:
As many of you know, this was not his first time to china and i bet it wont be the last. So i dont know if he was brushing up on his chinese, but he knew a few words...like hello (ni hao), thank you (xiexie) and goodbye (Ziajian). Well, it is customary to say thank you after a person serves you. it is called being polite..which he was doing except he was saying xixi for "thank you" which in the direct mandarin translation can mean "western west", but since we are in Kunming, the dialect here is that if you say "xixi", it means the same as "xiexie"...also in Chongqing you can say "a xie". So people probably thought he was actually from around here until he needed something....then i had to translate. Oh well, at least i got one good story out of it......that i am allowed to share.
Pictures still to come.....
